The Shadow, November 15, 1937. Cover by George Rozen.
For the record, Sheridan Doome was a character written by Stephen Gould between 1935 and 193.
A U.S. Naval Intelligence agent, he was blown to bits in the Great War and had to be pieced back together as best they could. Afterward, he was mostly muscles, scars and metal.
He is described as "Doome was a tall, ghastly figure. His face was blank and gruesome, a white mass void of emotion. He had neither traces of hair nor whiskers and for eyes he had only black blotches. His mouth was a grim slit. A squared-off stump in the middle of his face was his nose. His uniform hung on him loosely, and sticking above his collar were two tiny iron braces."
Makes Reacher sound cute.

I know that back then society was more casual about spousal abuse, but I am pretty sure putting your wife's eye out would be a step too far.
Anyways, given that Blackhawk is a Pulp Hero already, that makes sense!

George Gross' cover for the Warner Paperback edition of The Avenger: River of Ice.
If The Avenger looks eerily similar to his fellow Street & Smith pulp hero, Doc Savage, it's because the model used for this painting is actor Steve Holland. Holland was the model used by artist James Bama for his famous Doc Savage paperback covers.

Captain Combat # 1, 1940, cover by Frederick Blakeslee
"The Sky Beast of Berlin" by Robert Hogan (as Barry Barton), "Claws of the Eagle" by Robert Garrison, and "The Ancient Ace" by G. Gordon Raines.
There were only three Captain Combat pulps.
And just who invited the sub to an aerial dog fight?

Alex Ross, cover for "Tha Shadow #19", 2012
One of my favorite pieces by Alex Ross. I love the dichotomy of backgrounds here. It's brilliantly innovative, and the scarf resembles blood spewing out of The Shadow in a torrent.
